Last week I passed along some of the common mistakes that our case managers have seen on VA pension applications. Since that blog post has such a positive response I have decided to take the next few weeks to share some of our case managers best advice for a smooth application process.
- Make a list to put on the front of the file as to what documents you are waiting for. Remind the family what they are working towards.
- Remind your client that they need to inform you and give a copy of any letters that come to them. The VA should send a letter out 4 weeks after the application has been submitted that will provide the file #.
- Always keep the fax confirmation! When an application is sent back you only have 30 days to resubmit it. The VA automatically sends out a denial letter on day 29. The fax confirmation is your proof that you sent it in on time.
- Once you have completed a caregiver agreement the caregiver should start receiving funds. Do not wait until the application is approved. Remember, the client has a caregiver agreement to show that they need help doing daily tasks (that’s the aid in aid & attendance) . The VA could ask for a copy of the cashed checks showing that you are adhering to the caregiver agreement.
