Here are a couple of more questions as promised. We at AVAPP hope they answer some questions maybe you have faced.
Q. My sister was my parent’s caregiver and was named in the caregiver’s agreement. Her circumstances have changed; I will now be their caregiver. We do not want the pension to stop. What do I need to do?
A new caregiver agreement must be written naming you as the caregiver. A new caregiver bank account should be established in your name or your name added to the existing account. You will need to write a letter to the V, provide a copy of the new caregiver agreement and a voided check showing you have been added to the existing account or a new caregiver account has been set up under your name. Do not notify the VA about the change until these things have been done. This should result in no impact on the monthly VA check.
Q. My mother is expecting a large inheritance. She is currently receiving Aid and Attendance pension. Will she lose her pension when this occurs?
She very well could. This would require some pre-planning. If there is not a Veteran’s Asset Protection Trust (VAPT) in place, speak with your attorney.regarding the expected inheritance. If the inheritance could be distributed in the name of the trust instead of your mother’s name, this would have no impact on her pension.
