Medical expenses are rather nebulous on the VA website; one must dig for what is acceptable and what is not. Some of the following list may not be readily apparent:

  • Assisted living expenses (assistance bathing , medication dispensing, dressing, transportation to and from medical appointments)
  • Memory Care expenses (such as, incontinence needs or other needs due to immobility)
  • Medicare premiums
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Secondary Health Care Insurance premiums
  • Long-term care premiums (not activated until pension has been awarded or it counts as income)
  • Care-giver agreements for independent living facilities or agencies which are licensed and bonded using certified CSAs

Hint: Medical expenses need to be consistent costs per month. Just remember that the expenses must be equal to or greater than their monthly income. At the end of the year, you can, however, do an itemized list of extemporaneous expenses to complete the medical expense report.
